Bonde Venus by Josef Von Sternberg with Marlene Dietrich
Brussels Filmmuseum on 05/06/2005

It is bad enough you call your social melodrama 'Blonde Venus',
but you have to be Von Sternberg to start it with 6 German actresses swimming naked while being spied upon by 7 American men.
There's is no holding back either in the voodoo song sung by a gorilla, surrounded by archetypical 'black' dansers with curly wigs and a stuttering black bartender as chorus.
The melodrama goes on to become a roadmovie, digging into Amerika's poverty.
Dietrich being in almost every scene, ranging from a mother singing for her son to seducing a dandy to save her husband,
there is no time to loose interest.
