14/02/2006 Ian Curtis died by his own hand in 1980, the year Talking Heads released Remain in Light, with Once in a Lifetime and Houses in Motion on it. And normally you wouldn't try to imagine what would have happened if David Byrne would have joined that year as the new singer of Joy Division/New Order.
But now there's Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the band that sells out venues without a record company or even a distribution deal -they have one now. They are the first internet band: self-released, self-promoted and self-distributed.
And live they sound like ... New Order with a very lively David Byrne.
Touring on 1 album is not the easiest of things, but in at least 5 or 6 songs the magic happens: a drummer that makes you wonder if he's human, melting with a rolling melodic bass, completed with an eery vocal accompanied by a tight right hand. New wave finally lost its desperation. Fascinating how the public responded to the same intro's of those 'hits' -without ever being promoted as a traditional radio single.
Then what?
Seems like Clap Your Hands are allready moving beyond the universum of their first album, a song about satan and a 90° turn to rock make you wonder where they'll go.
